Number the Stars
By: Lois Lowry

Chapter 1:
*Why is Kirsti not afraid of the soldiers?
I think Kristi is not afraid of the soldiers because the soldiers are not very important to her. She also thinks that they are just people that are part of the landscape. I also think that Kirsti is not afraid of the soldiers is because she really doesn't know what the soldiers have been doing ether. The last reason I have is that Kristi doesn't know much about what the soldiers harm that they can do to her.

*How would you have felt if you had been Annemarie when the soldiers spoke to her? Why?
If I was in Annemarie's place I would have been freaked out and I would be shaking from head to toe. I would feel this way because the soldiers might hurt me or kill me too. I would also feel this way because they might take us way from our families never to see them again.

Chapter 2:
* Do you think King Christian did the right thing when he surrendered to the
Nazis? Why?
I think King Christian did the right thing when he surrendered to the Nazis because he had to few soldiers fight. He also did not want his people to die ether. He choose this because he didn't have a huge army like the Nazis. He only had a small army from his country called Denmark. He would lose to many people and it would be a pointless battle because the Nazis would win anyways.

* Would you be willing to die to protect the leader of your country? Why?
I would not be willing to die to protect the leader of my country. I think that there might be something or someone else to do that could be just as important that I could do.

*What happened to Annemarie's older sister Lise?
Annemarie's older sister Lise died in an accident two weeks before her wedding day. :-(

*How has Annemarie's family changed after the death of Lise?
Annemarie's family changed after the death of Lise because her father looked more old, very tired, and defeated. Her mom and dad never spoke of her name or went through Lise's trunk ether.

Chapter 3:
*Annemarie believes that ordinary people like her don't have to be courageous. Do you agree with this idea?
I do not agree with that because you have to be courageous to do something what you are not supposed to do. Annemarie and Ellen were running in the streets when they were not supposed to so they got in trouble. You have to be very courageous to be able to stand with those soldiers staring right through you.

*
What religion do the Rosens practice?
The religion that the Rosens practice is Judaism. ( Jewish Beliefs )

*Predict what you think will happen next in the story?
I think that something will happen with Ellen's family because they are talking all about Ellen's beliefs. Another prediction that is also possible is that Annemarie might have to save her friend Ellen and all of the other Jews. It said on the last page of the third chapter, paragraph two and the beginning of paragraph 3 she thinks," Would I really die to protect them? Truly?" I think that told me that something will happen when she is ether going to die for her friend or let her friend die and her live.
That line could be considered a foreshadowing.

Chapter 4:
*What are the answers to the questions that are the titles of the first three chapters?
Why Are You Running? - this question was answered when Annemarie and Ellen were racing each other on the street. When two soldiers came out and stopped the two girls at the corner of the street the soldiers asked them," Why are you running?" Annemarie answered we were racing each other to practice for the race on the on Friday.
Who Is the Man Who Rides Past? - the answer to this question was King Christain rides on his horse named Jubilee rides through Copenhagen every morning.
Where Is Mrs. Hirsch? -
Mrs. Hirsch is living with her friend because the Germans shut down her button shop where she gets all of her money. No one knows where Mrs. Hirsch is; Mama seems to suspect that she has been taken away by the Nazi soldiers.

*The title of this chapter is "It Will Be a Long Night." Why was it a long night?
The chapter is called "It Will Be a Long Night because Ellen has to be protected from the Germans. The Germans want to kill all of the Jewish people and Ellen is Jewish so Annemarie's family has to protect her for a while. Annemarie has to act like Ellen is her sister so that Ellen blends in with the family.

*Why does Ellen spend the night with Annemarie?
Ellen has to spend the night with Annemarie because the Germans were looking for all the Jews to be " relocated." Annemarie's family has to hid Ellen so that Ellen can be safe.

Chapter 5:

*Why do the soldiers come to the Johansen’s apartment?
I think that the soldiers came to the Johansen's apartment because they were neighbors to the the Jewish family the Rosen's. The soldiers thought that the Johansen family would know where the Rosen's family went. They also thought that they were trying to hid their family in their apartment.

*What do you think they expected to find?
I think the soldiers expected to find where the Rosen's family was. Maybe the soldiers were also looking for if they had them hiding somewhere in their apartment.

*Why does Annemarie tear the necklace from Ellen’s neck?
Annemarie tears the necklace from Ellen's neck because it was a necklace of The Star of David. The Star of David is a Jewish star. When the soldiers came in and looked at the girls. If Ellen had her necklace on they would have known that she was Jewish.

*When Papa tore the pictures from his photo album, what was he trying to prove?
Papa tore the picture from his photo album because he was trying to prove that Ellen ( aka: Fake Lisa ) that Lisa had dark curls and had dark hair. Annemarie and Kirsti have blond hair and the soldiers just want to make sure that Lisa is not a Jew.

*Do you think Annemarie is brave?
I think that Annemarie is somewhat brave. She is brave because she didn't let out the secret the Ellen was a fake. I think she is not brave because she was so nervous that Ellen might be caught because she didn't have blonde like Kirsti or herself.

*Why does Mama want to travel to Uncle Henrik’s house alone?
Mama wants to travel alone to Uncle Henrick's house because it would be suspicious if the whole family was gone and the soldiers would know. She thought it would be best if Mama, Ellen, and Annemarie would go alone.

*What are Papa and Uncle Henrik really talking about when they talk about “cigarettes”?
Papa was talking about "cigarettes" and Annemarie really knew what "cigarettes" was a code name for. It was a code name for Ellen so that she would be dropped off at Uncle Henrik's and maybe she might have to stay there forever.

Chapter 6:
*For what reason is Uncle Henrik’s home a good place to take a Jewish refugee?
I think Uncle Henrik's home is a good place to take a Jewish refugee because this place is in the middle of no where and it is in the country.

*
Describe how you felt as you read this chapter.
I felt sad and also scared in this chapter. I felt sad because I am thinking that Ellen will have to stay with Uncle Henrik and Annemarie will never be able to see Ellen again for a while. I felt scared because the two soldiers might have reconized their faces and might have taken them away.

*Why are Mama and Annemarie frightened when Kirsti decides to talk to the soldiers on the train?
I think that Mama and Annemarie was frightened when Kristi talks to the soldiers on the train because they thought she was going to talk about Ellen being Jewish. Luckily Kristi says,"I'm going to visit my Uncle Henrik," she chirped,"and I'm wearing my brand-new shiny black shoes!" I bet Mama and Annemarie were glad that Kristi didn't say anything about Ellen and how this is her New Year.

*What do you think the soldiers expected Kirsti to say?
I think that the soldiers expected that Kristi would say something about how it is Ellen's New Year. I think that because the soldiers asked if they are ready for the New Year. I also think that Kristi would say something silly too that had no concern to them.

Chapter 7:
*How do Ellen and Annemarie feel as they explore Gilleleje?
Ellen and Annemarie feel happy and also relaxed. I think they felt happy because they were far away from the soldiers and they felt very safe. I think that they felt relaxed because they were out in the country and they didn't have to worry as much as they did in their town about the soldiers.

*Why is this visit different for Annemarie than other times she visited Uncle Henrik?
I think this visit is different for Annemarie than other times she visited Uncle Henrick because she didn't have to worry about all the soldiers and Ellen. She is so worried that something will happen to Ellen because of the soldiers.

*Describe Uncle Henrik and Mama’s relationship.
Uncle Henrik and Mama's relationship between them is that they were brother and sister. I also say that they love to be together because Mama always looks like she is having so much fun with him like teasing him. I also think that they love to talk about what has been going on and you can tell that they love each other very much.

Chapter 8:
*What two statements does Uncle Henrik make that worry or puzzle Annemarie?
One of the two statements is that "Tomorrow will be a day for fishing," and the second statement that puzzled her is that she never heard of her Great-aunt Birte because she thinks she remembers that no one in her mom's stories where there was a Great-aunt Birte.

*Do you agree with Annemarie that Great-aunt Birte doesn’t exist?
I do agree with Annemarie that her Great-aunt Birte doesn't exisit because her parents would have told her about her Great-aunt Birte's death. I think that she died truly because Annemarie's parents and uncle wouldn't lie to her about a death.

*What do you think Uncle Henrik means by “Tomorrow will be a day for fishing”?
I think that Uncle Henrik means by "Tomorrow will be a day for fishing," is that they will have to look at different places to find the right place for Ellen to hide from the soldiers.

He means that tomorrow will be a good day for him to smuggle Jewish refugees to Sweden on his fishing boat.

Chapter 9:
*Who do you think the ‘mourners” are?
I think that the people that came in the house late at night are the mourners. I think that because all the people that came in the house gathered around the casket.
These people were Jewish refugees just like Ellen and her family.

*How does Uncle Henrik explain to Annemarie why he and Mama lied to her about Great –aunt Birte?
Uncle Henrik explained by telling her that Mama and Uncle Henrik were trying to make her more brave for something that might happen in the future.

*Find a line from this chapter that shows Annemarie is maturing.
The line that tells that Annemarie is maturing is on
page 77 paragraph 4. It shows that Annemarie is maturing because she knows why her mother and her uncle are lying to her and that she forgave them too.

Hi this is
Lizzy. You didn't do chapter 10. Try to finish that tonight. Thanks for adding a little color. It looks better.

Chapter 10:

*What familiar phrase is in the psalm that Peter reads to the “mourners”?
The familiar phrase that is in the psalm that Peter reads is ,"and He will number the stars".

*How do you think most of the people at Uncle Henrik’s house felt during the wake?
I think the people felt nervous because it was past their no lights on rule but they had candles on. Another feeling that the people could have felt is worried that maybe the soldiers might come in Uncle Henrik's house.

*How does Mama keep the soldier from opening the casket?
Mama keeps the soldiers from opening the casket by telling the soldiers that Great-aunt Birte had this disease called typhus. Mama said the doctor wanted no one to be near the great aunt so that no one gets the disease. The soldier sounded a little doubtful.

*Reread the psalm and Annemarie’s reaction to the reading of it. What do you think is the significance of the title of this book?
I think that what Peter read," He who numbers the stars one by one...." is pretty significant because the title of the book is called Number the Stars.

Chapter 11:
*What is in the casket?
In the casket was articals and tattered clothing for the Jewish people so that the can stay warm when they go on the water.

*Why did Peter insist upon giving the baby some medicine?
Peter insisted upon giving the baby some medicine because the baby might cry. That won't help because if the soldiers hear the people they would get caught and they might get killed. They don't want to take that risk.

*One possible theme for this novel is that it is easier for people to be brave if they do not know everything. Use an incident that happened in this novel to prove this.
You can prove that when Peter gave Annemarie's father a little package which contains something. Her father did not ask what was in the little package because it might lead to trouble. It also might make her father scared or maybe something worse. It is best to just do then to know everything.

*Find a section of this chapter that shows Annemarie no longer thinks of herself as the carefree child she once was.
Annemarie doesn't think of herself as a carefree child because she has to worry about things that parents would usualy worry about not a child like Annemarie.

Chapter 12:

Annemarie volunteers to take the packet to Uncle Henrik because her mother has a swollen ankle and her little sister Kristi is asleep.

*Why doesn’t Mama tell Annemarie what is in the basket?
Mama doesn't tell Annemarie what is in the basket because it is better not to know things. That is because if something that is secret might scare you and you might not want to do anything of what people are asking her.

Chapter 14:
*There is a reference to the story of Little Red Riding Hood in this chapter. Which characters from story are like Red Riding Hood and the wolf?
The characters from the story are like Red Riding Hood and the wolf because Mama was the mother of little red riding hood. Annemarie was Little Red Riding Hood and the wolf was the soldiers because Annemarie was hearing some growling from the bushes. Uncle Henrik was like the Grandmother.

*In this chapter we see that Annemarie is confronted with reality and begins to less of a child. What is the reality she confronts?
The reality that she confronts is when she has to bring the basket of things to her Uncle Henrik alone. She doesn't know the way that well at night so she is afraid of if she might hurt her ankle like her mother or get caught by the soldiers.

*What is your reaction to how the soldiers treated Annemarie?
I felt like if they didn't care about what she said they just ignored her. I also felt angry because they didn't even say anything nice.

*List three times when the German soldiers are rude to Annemarie.
One time that the German soldiers are rude to Annemarie is when the took her basket when they didn't even ask for it. Another rude moment is when the soldiers threw her loaf of bread to the German dogs. The last rude thing that they did to Annemarie is that they made rude comments about her lunch that she made quickly to hide the package.

Annemarie acts like Kristi because she can't be all nervous about the soldiers like she was in Copenhagen. She has to act like a silly little girl that is taking her Uncle a lunch.

Chapter 16:
*How does Uncle Henrik define “brave” to Annemarie? Based on this definition, is Annnemarie be considered brave?

Uncle Henrik shares that they are safe to Sweden because there is this little compartment under the boat that can fit a couple of people in there. He also shared that Ellen was listing to every word that Annemarie said to Uncle Henrik. The last thing that he told is that the hankerchief keeps the dogs from smelling meat or human scent.

*Describe something funny that happens in this chapter.
I think the funny thing that is in this chapter is that Uncle Henrik said," It was bad enough that your mother was going to milk her, after all these years of my city life. But Annemarie! To do it for the very first time! I'm surprised Blossom didn't kick you!"

Chapter 17:

Some people were shot and Peter was shot in the arm. Lise, however, she got run over by a military truck and she died.

*Where does Annemarie hide Ellen’s Star of David necklace?
Annemarie hides Ellen's Star of David necklace in the blue trunk and it was in the skirt of Lise's yellow dress.

Afterword:
List three incidents in the story that were actual historical events.
One of the three incidents in the story that were actual historical events was Denmark surrendered to Germany in 1940. Another incident that really happened was that King Christian really did ride through town every morning in Copenhagen. The last but not least the handkerchief was really something that they had to protect the smugglers under the boats. It contained of dried rabbit's blood and cocaine. The blood attracted the dogs, but when they sniffed at it, the cocaine numbed their noses and temporarily destroyed their sense of smell.

Most of the questions were answered well, Emily, but you forgot to do some of them, and some answers were not right.
